“Mycelium” Prop fabrication / Set dressing

Ad campaign | adidas — stan smith mylo | 2020

My friend, Gandalf mailed me (yes, that is his name. He’s French.)
”Adidas needs a giant mushroom.”
I won’t tell you the number of Hobbit jokes that jumped to my mind.
”Sure. How big and by when?”
”As large as a chair and by Tuesday.” (It was Wednesday.)
We talked about 3D printing it, but it was too large and not enough time. So we made it out of styrofoam and angel clay, a super soft foam clay. It’s always fun with such an organic set piece, particularly here where there was a bit of freedom in getting the shapes down. Mushroom shoes… what a cool concept.

Concept to Construct.

Adidas provided us with a pretty solid concept. At first, they asked if we could make it exactly like their concept art. Yes, of course we could, but as time went on, it kept evolving into this … living thing. Well, not really living obviously, but the sculpture just kept growing and changing and taking on new formations and life and in the end, we did in fact put some real mushrooms on it. Had a good dinner after that, too.
